"You're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!" -Dr. Seuss
Friday January 23: I Have a Dream!
This week we learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all of the amazing things that he did for our country, and we read a fun picture book about Dr. King! We learned about the contributions that Dr. King gave to our country, and how thanks to him we know have equality in our country. We did an activity with three different colored apples to learn that, although we may look different on the outside we're the same on the inside (although we each have wonderful, unique traits!) This helped us to understand why Dr. King worked so hard to fight for equality. We also got to take some time to practice our writing skills, and take some time to write about what we dream about it, and if we could give a speech like Dr. King did, what would we say!
Friday January 30th: Winter Time Math Fun!
This week we got to practice our math skills, and share our love of the winter time! We did an enriching and hands on math activity that included a big paper cut out snow man. The snow man had the numbers 1-10 written on it, and we each got to take a turn tossing a bean bag onto the snowman; whatever number our bag landed on (or closest to) we worked together as a class, to build on the ten frame! We also worked on math problems that had us solving how many marshmallows we would put in our hot chocolate, and then we made hot chocolate as a class! We got to practice our measurement skills when we made the hot chocolate, which was extra fun! Thanks so much to the parent volunteers that brought in the hot cocoa and helped us to make it :) we had so much fun!
Friday February 6th: A Celebration!
This week was a wonderful week because the kiddos helped Ms. Kohler celebrate her birthday! I have the most wonderful students in the whole world, and they helped to make this my most special birthday yet! As a class we read stories about birthdays, and how they're celebrated in different countries, and we also learned to sing the 'Happy Birthday' song in German! It was neat! This helped to wrap up the lessons that we have been doing this week about learning about different cultures! We had some wonderful parent volunteers come in and share their stories, and relationship with different cultures with our kiddos! In our class we like to learn about many things all over the world, and learn about how all people are connected even if they are far apart!
Friday February 13th: A Valentines Extravaganza!
Today, Ms. Kohler's Kangaroos celebrated Valentines Day! It was a day full of love, kindness, learning and excitement! We had some wonderful family helpers, which made the whole day even more enjoyable! We took turn at stations doing different valentines activities. At one station we worked on our cutting skills and made "Stain Glass" valentine hearts. At another stations we each got to decorate two cupcakes- one for us to eat, and one to be delivered to a home for elderly people. We learned about how one of the best ways to show love is to do something kind for another person. It was a great day! :)
Friday February 20th: A Presidential Week!
This week we got Presidential! With Presidents Day falling this week, we studied and learned all about what Presidents Day means, and about the great Presidents of our country! We did a neat activity where we each got to make a silhouette cut out of ourselves, just like the Presidents have! We then got to individually brainstorm, and share out with the class about one thing we would do if we were President, that would make the world a better place! We read books
as a class about the different presidents, so that we could learn a lot about them! It was a great week!
Friday February 27th: Let It Snow!
This was a snowy and chilly week for Ms. Kohler and her creative Kangaroos! We had a few snow days which interrupted our week a bit, but overall we made the best of it! We practiced our reading skills by doing group reading and shared reading! We read a special book of poems about winter animals, called Winter Bees and a book about snowflakes called No Two Alike. Then we talked about how every single snow flake is different, but they are all equally wonderful and beautiful- just like we are!
Friday March 6th: Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
This week we celebrated the birthday of our favorite author, Dr. Seuss! Dr. Seuss has helped us to learn how to rhyme, and read, and to always try our best! This week some of our parents, family, and friends came in and read us a different Dr. Seuss story, which was so wonderful! Our class favorite was "Oh the Places You'll Go!" and we worked together to make posters where we wrote or illustrated our favorite quotes! The kiddos got a kick when Ms. Kohler came in dressed up like the Cat in the Hat. On Friday we had a special treat of 'green eggs and ham'! (It was really green vanilla pudding and nilla wafers!) Dr. Seuss helps us practice our rhyming and reading skills, and we even did a fun math lesson about "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish"!
Friday March 13th: Gak!
This week we had a scientific adventure! We began by reading "Bartholomew and the Oobleck!" by our favorite author, Dr. Seuss! We then got to make our own Oobleck (or gak!) which was so fun, and just a little bit messy! This was a great way for us to begin to learn about the difference between liquids and solids, and we had a great time playing with the ooblek! The consistency of it was ooey and gooey, and we practiced forming hypothesis about whether or not it was a liquid or solid. We drew pictures of it in our science notebooks, and each got to keep a little baggy of it to bring home (sorry parents!) Making it helped us to work together as a team, and practice our measurement skills! It was fun way to be hands on, and engaged in our own learning!
Friday March 20th: Luck of the Irish!
This week we celebrated St. Patricks Day in class! We read about Ireland, and Irish culture- this furthered the learning that we've been doing about different cultures all throughout the school year! Because my background is Irish, I brought in some of my grandmother's traditional Irish soda bread, played some of my favorite Irish music, and as a class we did some shared reading of tradition children's Irish folk lore! It was a great week of broadening our cultural horizons!
Friday March 27th: Virginia Discovery Museum!
Today was a very exciting day because we visited the Virginia Discovery Museum on the Down Town Mall! We've been talking a bit about Virginia in our class, and the many great things that Virginia has to offer. So, when we went to the museum we really focussed on learning as much as we could about Virginia; luckily, there were so many neat exhibits for us to explore! One of the neatest exhibits that we studied was the "Pollination Station and Bee Hive!" We've learned from some of the readings that we've done in class that bees are going extinct, and we really need them! This allowed us to get a close look at some bees, and how they work! It was really cool! But our favorite spot was the tree house room, where we got to have a comfy and cozy story time! It was a great day! Thank you to the wonderful parents and chaperones who helped us to make it possible :)
April 3rd: The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
This week the Kangaroos celebrated the coming of Spring by reading "A Very Hungry Caterpillar". We love this story about the hungry caterpillar, especially his crazy appetite! This helped us to learn about the life cycle of a cater pillar to a butterfly- we even got to practice this transformation ourselves! This helped us to get active, and engage in hands on learning! We did a shared reading of "A Very Hungry Caterpillar" which helped us to build our fluency skills! We then got to work on understanding components of a story, like setting, and characters! After all this hard work, we then got to go for a nice nature walk outside to look for caterpillars and butterflies! It was a great and nature filled week!
April 10th: April Showers Bring May Flowers!
This week the kangaroos did some more fun Spring time activities! We took some time to brain storm all of our favorites things about spring, and different words that we think of when we think about spring! We then added these words to our word wall, and made neat pictures that went along with each word! We then took some time to learn about flowers, and different life cycles of flowers; we learned that it takes a lot for a flower to grow, and we need lots of things, like bees, to make it happen! Then we talked about how we can be good citizens, and take care of the environment! This will help to make the world a better place. We had a great and fun filled week with lots of nature and sunshine!
Things to look forward to: Next week we will be going on a trip to Monticello! Be sure to send back your child's permission slip, and the chaperone form if you'd like to come with!
